This sounds like an obvious question, but there is more to it than you think. Unfortunately, we can’t answer all these questions for you, but we can at least try and guide you through some of the more important things to think about. Our main considerations would be;

  • Waterproof membrane
  • Side-zip

  • Safety rating

Depending on your own use case you may need a boot with all of the above, a select few features or none of them at all? With the help of the following questions, we’ll try and assist you narrow down what might be important to you.

Do I need waterproof Police Boots?

Best waterproof police boots

Are you based in a more rural location and likely to be subject to muddy fields and deep puddles? If so a pair of boots from our waterproof boots range with a built-in membrane may be your number one priority, the most well-known of which would be GORE-TEX however brands such as Magnum, Altberg and LOWA Boots have their own version which is arguably just as good.

On the other end of the same scale, if you’re based in a more urban area with a warmer temperature, it may be better to remove the waterproof membrane and choose a lightweight and breathable option like the Bates Tactical Sport 2, with its half leather and half textile design it’s much lighter and cooler for your feet.

Do I need a side-zip on my Tactical Boots?

Best side zip police boot

Will you be taking your tactical boots on and off frequently during the day? If that’s the case, easy on and off with a Side-Zip tactical boot may be a great benefit to you. Simply lace up your boots the first time you wear them and from then on you can use the zip to quickly get in and out of the boots with ease.

What Material Should I choose for my boots?

what material should I buy my boots in

Tactical boots come in a wide range of technical materials, some full leather, some all textile and others varying combinations of the two. More recently we’ve even seen the introduction of vegan friendly leathers. Each of these options come with their own unique benefits and drawbacks.

  • Leather Tactical Boots:Tactical boots have always been traditionally made with leather and for good reason, it’s naturally breathable offers great water resistance and is highly durable, although it’s not all good. Let’s get it out of the way, cost. Leather is an expensive material to produce and work with, a full leather boot can be significantly more expensive than a textile alternative. Leather Boots can also be quite heavy and will require some maintenance with a boot polish and boot waxes such as lowa active cream and Altberg leder gris to keep it operating effectively in the long term. Some of the more premium brands such as Altberg, Lowa and Haix will typically use a full leather construction.
  • Textile Tactical Boots:In more recent year’s fabric technology has progressed leaps and bounds offering great strength, light weight, extra breathability, and low maintenance compared to leather. The not so good… First and foremost, water resistance. Without an additional waterproof membrane, textile boots can’t come close to leather’s natural water resistance. Durability, for all the advances in technology, leather is still more hard wearing than textiles. Polishing your boots, some more traditional police forces will still require you to “bull” or at least polish your toe caps, this is not possible with a lot of textile boots.
  • The best of both worlds:Taking all this into consideration a lot of manufacturers such as Magnum Boots, Bates Boots, and more have had great success offering a combination of both leather and textile. Typically, this will mean a lightweight textile upper with all the advantages that comes with it coupled with a full leather or pu leather lower body.

What type of sole do my boots need?

Slips, trips and falls are common injury across all workplaces and this includes the Police. Slip resistance properties of the footwear sole unit are very important when choosing the correct footwear for specific job roles. A lot of the weight in occupational boots is contributed by the sole unit. So if you are on your feet all day, particular on flat terrain a really good choice would be a light weight compound found in the Haix Boots and Magnum Boots range. If you are working on more uneven, wet and muddy terrain a heavier duty option with more pronounced cleats is a good choice. Most of our ranges offer these including Altberg Boots, Lowa Boots and Haix Boots.

Do I need to wear a safety boot?

Do I need safety boots?

Last but not least, do you require a Tactical boot with a safety toe cap to protect you from heavy falling objects? Or do you require a protective mid sole to protect you from sharp objects potentially penetrating the sole?

All safety footwear conforms to the EN ISO20345 standard, and there are different classifications out there signifying the level of protection from SB right up to S5. The higher you go the more additional features are incorporated in the boot such as penetration resistance and water resistant properties.

There are also additional features like composite toe caps and metal free midsoles which offer all the protection but are much lighter than steel. It also means that these are ideal to be used in areas where metal detectors are used such as airports and prisons.

We supply safety footwear from huge brands such as Magnum Boots, Blackrock Bootsand Haix Boots. Police Supplies stocks a full range of portal safe certified safety boots. Safety footwear can be a minefield so if you're still unsure exactly what your requirements are we would also encourage you to contact our team who would be delighted to help.
